You should always do a color sample on the concrete you plan to stain since all surfaces are unique and the stain will react differently with each slab. Create your sample in an area that won’t be seen or will be covered up. Good places for samples are in a closet, under the stairs, in a utility room, or where cabinets or appliances will be installed – Concrete Network

When staining concrete floors make sure you choose the right type of stain for the look you are trying to create; there’s a few options, and plenty of space for creativity
- Acid Stain: Provides the most variegated finish, but highly dependant on the substrate you are applying to
- Acetone Stain: More consistent finish, still with variation and “movement,” suitable for internal only
- Water Stains: Highly controllable and easy to use but ensure a porous surface to maximise adhesion

I suggest – not going for a solid color because it can look like a dense solid block. Layering colour is probably easier than stencilling and probably won’t date as quickly – Decorated Life

It is essential that you ensure there is no rising damp, and that the floors are diamond ground to achieve a strong mechanical and chemical bond between the selected coatings and the substrate. This will also produce a flat even finish which will reduce wear and in some instances for internal floor areas you can use the ground coarseness to provide the slip resistance… – Advanced Waterproofing Systems
